Dead Cells ‘Barrels o’ Fun’ update now available for PC, coming to consoles later this summer

New biome, enemies, weapons, soundtrack, explosive barrels, and breakable walls.

Dead Cells

The “Barrels o’ Fun” update for Dead Cells is now available for PC (Steam) and will come to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch later this summer, developers Motion Twin and Evil Empire announced.

Here is an overview of the update, via Motion Twin:

New Biome

The new biome is called The Derelict Distillery and as with all the other levels in Dead Cells, we wanted to give it a distinct atmosphere. So expect to see loads of old broken barrels and bottles, pipes venting steam, cool looking metal containers in the background—that kind of thing. There’s also some barrels sitting around that you’ll be able to interact with in a couple of ways, some are harmless and others are quite a bit more dangerous…

New Enemies

What’s a new level without new foes? Nothing, so you’ll find some huge fellas who throw some pretty big explosive barrels right into your face, or if you get too close they’ll just smash a barrel onto the ground and jump clear, leaving you to take the blast.

You’ll also have to deal with a sneaky mimic hiding among the regular barrels in the corridors. They’re not the toughest mob out there but they have a pretty devastating self-destruct which can catch you out if you’re not careful. They’re also pretty fast, so they can and will chase you down.

New Weapons

Onto the weapons now, and we thought that if enemies can hurl barrels at you, then you should be allowed to throw some straight back right? So we’re introducing the barrel launcher—a bazooka-style weapon that fires bouncing exploding barrels, what more can we say?

After shock damage arrived in our last update we needed to add a trap that can dish out shock damage too, so we created the tesla coil. Useful for dealing damage to large groups of enemies, throw it down whenever you need a bit of crowd control – which is pretty much always if we’re being honest!

Explosive Barrels and Breakable Walls

Explosive barrels aren’t just limited to the barrel launcher and enemy abilities. You’ll find them dotted around the Distillery, and if you time it right you can use them to your advantage. Watch out though, because enemy attacks affect them as well so you need to be on your toes. Some mini platforming style sections are thrown into the level too. Yeah, there’s a lot of explosions in this biome…

Entire New Soundtrack

As well as new gameplay content, there’s also a whole new soundtrack available. The classic Dead Cells songs have been reworked by Yoann in the style of chiptune / 8-bit music, so make sure to enjoy some retro style runs!

Full patch notes are available here.

Dead Cells is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC via Steam, iOS via the App Store, and Android via Google Play.

The Last of Us Part II version 1.05 update launches August 13, adds ‘Grounded’ difficulty, ‘Permadeath’ mode, gameplay modifiers, and more

1 hour ago0 Comment1

Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Naughty Dog will release the version 1.05 update for The Last of Us Part II on August 13, which introduces new features, gameplay modes, Trophies, and more, including the return of the “Grounded” difficulty.

Here are the details, via PlayStation Blog:

Grounded Difficulty Returns, Plus New Permadeath Mode

For veteran The Last of Us fans, “Grounded” difficulty represents the ultimate test of skill. This difficulty raises the stakes by not only making enemies deadlier and ammo, upgrade, and crafting materials incredibly scarce, but also removing invaluable tools for survival, such as disabling Listen mode, deactivating elements of the HUD, and more. Beginning with the update, Grounded will become one of the base difficulty options available when starting the story, so you won’t need to have beaten the game once already to access it.

The Last of Us Part II

As an additional layer of challenge, we’re also introducing a brand new “Permadeath” mode. With this custom mode enabled, there are no second chances—you must complete the entire game without dying or start over from the beginning. However, if taking on the whole game is too daunting, you can choose to enable Permadeath mode with checkpoints on a per-chapter or per-act basis. In other words, if you die at the end of Day One, you’ll have to play the entire day over again.

The Last of Us Part II

You’ll also be rewarded for your efforts. The Grounded update introduces two new Trophies: one for completing the game with any Permadeath mode enabled and another for beating it on Grounded difficulty. Don’t worry, though, neither of these Trophies will be required in order to earn the Platinum.

New Graphics, Audio, and Gameplay Modifiers

Have you ever wondered what The Last of Us Part II would look like as a cel-shaded adventure or if it was made in the retro 8-bit era? How about if it was a black and white noir thriller or sepia-toned classic? With this week’s update, we’re adding nearly 30 new graphics rendering modes, as well as several new audio modifiers that allow you to change the look and feel of the game.

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II

We’re also debuting new unlockable gameplay modifiers, like One Shot or Touch of Death that enable one-hit kills or Infinite Ammo, Infinite Crafting, or Infinite Listen Mode Range to add a new twist to gameplay:

  • Mirror World
  • Mirror on Death
  • Slow Motion
  • Bullet Speed mode
  • Infinite Ammo
  • Infinite Crafting
  • Infinite Melee Durability
  • Infinite Listen mode Range
  • One Shot
  • Touch of Death
  • 8-bit Audio
  • 4-bit Audio
  • Helium Audio
  • Xenon Audio

All of these modifiers can be accessed via the Extras menu and unlocked after completing the game.

New Options and Improvements

Alongside these new modes, we’re excited to introduce a number of frequently requested improvements to the game, including the option to disable Listen Mode, adjust Film Grain levels, additional display options, improvements to accessibility features, and more. For our friends in the speedrunning community, we’re also adding the ability to see playtime up to the second in the saves menu, making it easier to track and verify your runs. Here’s a quick overview of the new features that will be added with the Grounded update:

  • Saves now display playtime up to the second
  • Film Grain Adjustment option
  • Disable Listen Mode option
  • Motion Sensor Function Aiming option
  • Arc Throw HUD Display option
  • Aiming Acceleration Scale option
  • Aiming Ramp Power Scale option
  • Accessibility improvements to Ground Zero encounter, collectible tracking, Enhanced Listen Mode for collectibles, and rope gameplay

“The fans are the lifeblood of the Little Witch Academia series, and that principle guided us at UNIVRS when creating VR Broom Racing,” said UNIVRS COO Naoya Koji in a press release. “We strived to make this as accessible an experience as possible for the fans, even if it’s their first virtual reality experience, and know we will live up to their expectations.”

Here is an overview of the game, via UNIVRS:

Enroll as a guest student at the famous Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy, then ride a broom and soar through the skies across more than 10 tracks. Partner with fan-favorite Little Witch Academia characters such as Akko, Lotte, and Sucy, voiced in both English and Japanese by the anime’s voice actors. Unfold a new story and dive into the Little Witch Academia universe in immersive virtual reality. Pair up with fellow students while purifying ghosts, and customizing brooms. Join real-world friends in online multiplayer modes and take in the splendor of the Luna Nova Witchcraft Academy.

This adaptation of Studio Trigger’s hit anime series features veterans of anime and gaming such as director Junichi Yamamoto, whose past positions include opening and ending movie director on The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and storyboard artist of Batman Ninja, and sound supervisor Yukio Nagasaki (Love Live!, Arc the Lad). Along with the returning voice cast, TV series songwriter / composer Yuiko Ohara and singer YURiKA return with a new theme song “Dream Flight,” exclusive to this game.

Little Witch Academia: VR Broom Racing sees the fulfillment of a pair of successful 2019 crowdfunding campaigns, with more than $165,000 raised in total between Kickstarter, and popular Japanese crowdfunding site Campfire. The Little Witch Academia series has always been driven by fan support, with a short film raising $625,518 from 7,938 backers, and its success leading to a 25-episode Netflix series.

Second Extinction

Dinosaur-themed three-player cooperative shooter Second Extinction will launch in Early Access for PC via Steam in September, developer Systemic Reaction announced. It will also launch for Xbox Series X and Xbox One at a later date.

Systemic Reaction also detailed the “War Effort,” Second Extinction‘s community-centric meta-game, in an interview with IGN.

“The War Effort reflects the changes in the ongoing fight against the dinosaurs and ensures you’ll always have to stay on your toes. It’s a highly interactive, community-driven environment for players to fight in, letting us create new content that evolves over time,” Second Extinction product owner Julianne Harty told IGN. “The War Effort is an integral part of how we’ll introduce new dinosaurs, missions, and more as a live service experience, and it’s a feature we’re excited to fully flesh out throughout early access.”
